Self-hosted proxies against bought ones: what running your own costs
You can run your own proxy: rent a cloud server, install free proxy software such as Squid, and send your traffic through it. Each server gives you one address, and it is a datacenter address, the same kind a datacenter proxy plan sells. For one address the two cost a few dollars a month either way; for ten, today’s plans cost less, because at the cloud hosts below each address comes with a server you pay for, while proxy providers sell addresses in packages. Residential and mobile addresses cannot be self-hosted on a cloud server at all.
The same addresses, bought or self-hosted:
- 1 IP as datacenter proxies, cheapest: Proxy-Cheap at $1.42, monthly.
- 1 IP, dedicated to you: MyPrivateProxy at $2.49, monthly.
- 1 IP self-hosted, one server each: $4.00 a month at DigitalOcean, before your own time.
- 10 IPs as datacenter proxies, cheapest: Webshare at $2.99, monthly (its smallest package, 100 IPs).
- 10 IPs, dedicated to you: Decodo at $17.50 + VAT, monthly.
- 10 IPs self-hosted, one server each: $40.00 a month at DigitalOcean, before your own time.
Proxy prices are today's checked checkouts. The server price is DigitalOcean's smallest server, read Oct 13, 2026; a server comes with its own outbound traffic allowance.
Answer · The live comparison uses prices checked up to Oct 24, 2026; every figure in the text keeps the date it was checked.

What self-hosting takes
The software is free. Squid describes itself as “a caching proxy for the Web supporting HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and more” (Squid). Install it on a cloud server, allow only your own address or a login (proxy authentication), and point your software at the server’s address.
The address is the server’s. DigitalOcean says “each Droplet you create comes with its own public IPv4 address” (DigitalOcean: Droplet pricing), and Hetzner Cloud allows “a total of one Primary IP per type” (one IPv4, one IPv6) on each server (Hetzner: Primary IPs). More addresses mean more servers, or extra addresses where the host sells them.
What it costs
The server is the bill. DigitalOcean’s smallest Droplet is $4.00 a month with 500 GiB of outbound transfer, read on 13 Oct 2026 (DigitalOcean: Droplet pricing). One address a month therefore costs a few dollars, as a single datacenter proxy does; ten addresses cost ten servers. The box above sets both side by side with today’s proxy prices.
What a plan does not charge for, self-hosting does: setting up and patching each server, replacing an address a site has blocked, and keeping the proxy closed to strangers. An open proxy found by others carries their traffic on your bill and your address.
The address is a datacenter address
A cloud server’s address belongs to the cloud company’s network, and sites that check where an address comes from see a hosting company, exactly as with a datacenter proxy (residential vs datacenter proxies). Self-hosting is a way to own datacenter addresses, not a way around what datacenter addresses can do. A residential or mobile address comes from a home or mobile connection, which a cloud server does not have (why residential proxies are expensive).
When it is worth it
- One or two addresses you keep for months, for your own tools, where you want full control of the server and its logs.
- Heavy traffic through few addresses: a server’s transfer allowance is included, so the traffic costs nothing extra up to it; per-GB proxy plans bill every GB (datacenter proxies compares both kinds).
- Not for many addresses, rotation or residential addresses: a provider’s pool is the cheaper way to those (what is a backconnect proxy).
