Smart proxy routing and unblockers: when paying for successful requests beats paying for traffic

With an ordinary proxy you pick the kind of address and handle failures yourself: a blocked request is retried by your code, and every attempt’s traffic is billed. A smart routing gateway, sold as an unblocker or a scraping API, picks the proxy for each request, retries with another address when a site blocks it, sets the browser details, and bills you only for the responses that came back. It costs more per gigabyte or per request, so it pays off when many of your requests would otherwise fail.

Billed per successful request, as our records hold it:

  • Zyte: from $0.13 per 1,000 successful requests pay as you go, down to $0.06 with a $500 monthly commitment, for the simplest sites; checked Oct 24, 2026.

A harder site costs more per request; the provider's page works out the rate for each site.

Every billing type competes; free plans are left out. The amounts are the kind a first purchase is made in; change them on each comparison.

Where the two cross, at 4 GB a month: plain residential traffic costs a median $6.25 a GB across 26 providers today, and Oxylabs Web Unblocker charges $7.20 a GB on its $30-a-month plan (checked Oct 19, 2026). You pay for every attempt through a proxy and only for what came back through the gateway, so the gateway costs less once fewer than about 9 in 10 of your first attempts come back usable.

This takes a blocked answer to weigh as much as a real page; where block pages are smaller, the proxy keeps its lead a little longer. Work it out with your own success rate.

Who handles a blocked request, through a proxy you buy and through a smart routing gateway.
  1. A proxy you buy
    1. Your softwaresends the request through the proxy
    2. The proxyforwards it from the address you chose
    3. The siteanswers, or sends a block page
    4. Your softwaresees the block page and tries again
Every attempt is traffic on your bill, the blocked ones too.
  2. A smart routing gateway
    1. Your softwaresends the request to the gateway
    2. The gatewaypicks an address and browser details, and retries from another if the site blocks it
    3. The siteanswers one of the attempts
    4. Your softwaregets the page
Only the answer that came back is billed, at a higher rate than plain traffic.

What the gateway does that a proxy does not

A proxy forwards what you send. If the site answers with a block page or a challenge, you get that answer, your software decides what to do, and the traffic is on your bill either way.

A smart routing gateway sits in the same place, between your software and the site, and makes those choices for you. Two of them, in their makers’ words:

  • Oxylabs Web Unblocker “selects and rotates proxies, evaluates which proxy pools work the best on a specific site, and gives you the highest success rate with the lowest response time possible”, and “will select the right headers, cookies, JavaScript rendering and other browser parameters for you” (Oxylabs).
  • Zyte API offers “automatic ban handling, rendering, sessions, and extraction”, over “residential, datacenter, and mobile IPs with automatic rotation on every request” (Zyte).

You connect to either like a proxy, or call it as an API, and you no longer choose between residential and datacenter addresses: the gateway does.

How they are priced

The two bill differently, and neither bills a failed request:

  • By the gigabyte of successful responses. Oxylabs says “pay only for successfully extracted data”. Its price page, checked on Oct 18, 2026, lists Web Unblocker at $7.20 a GB on its $30-a-month plan (up to 4 GB), $6 on $100 (up to 16 GB), $4.80 on $500 (up to 104 GB) and $3 from $2,500 a month (Oxylabs).
  • By the thousand successful requests. Zyte prices each site by how hard it is to reach, in five tiers from “Simple” to “Advanced”. Pay as you go, checked on Oct 18, 2026, a plain page costs “From $0.13 to $1.27 per 1,000 requests”, and a page rendered in a browser $1.01 to $16.08; a monthly commitment lowers the rate (Zyte). Its page works out the tier when you type in the site’s address.

The box at the top of this page shows Zyte’s rates as our records hold them, beside what plain residential traffic costs today.

When it costs less

A gigabyte through a residential proxy is cheaper than a gigabyte through an unblocker. The difference is what you pay for:

  • Through a proxy, you pay for every attempt. If half your attempts come back blocked, you pay for about two attempts for each page you keep (a little less where the block page is smaller than the real one), plus the time your code spends retrying.
  • Through a gateway, you pay only for what came back, at a higher rate.

So the question is your success rate on your targets. Where an ordinary residential proxy gets nearly every page on the first try, it is the cheaper route by a wide margin. Where most first attempts are blocked, the gateway’s higher rate can work out lower per page you keep. The cost per successful request calculator does this sum with your own success rate; a provider’s advertised rate is its claim, not a measurement.

What to check before you switch

  • Your own success rate. Run a day of your real requests through a plain proxy and count the pages that come back usable, not only those with status 200.
  • The tier your target falls in. At Zyte, a site judged “Advanced” costs about ten times one judged “Simple”.
  • Page weight. A per-gigabyte gateway gets dearer as pages get heavier; a per-request gateway does not (how much bandwidth scraping uses).
  • Whether you need a browser. At Zyte, a page rendered in a browser costs eight to thirteen times a plain fetch of the same tier.
