Why are residential proxies expensive?
The price premium is measurable, but its cause is not in a pricing dataset. At Bright Data’s public pay-as-you-go rates, 50 GB computes to $200 for

That comparison answers “how much more” for a matched provider and billing model. It does not prove why Bright Data set those rates. plans.json records prices, checkout minimums, traffic tiers, commitments, expiry, rollover on the provider’s page, pooling and operational constraints. It does not record a provider’s payments to device owners, network acquisition costs, abuse workload, support payroll or margin. Any universal causal story based on this dataset would be invented.
What the data can show is where the residential premium appears, where it does not, and which product dimensions buyers are paying for.
Matched observations show a real gap
Bright Data is not the only provider where the same billing unit exposes a gap. Evomi publishes one-GB pay-as-you-go checkouts for both residential and datacenter traffic. The residential row is evomi-premium-residential-payg; the datacenter row is evomi-datacenter-payg.

These rows support a price-premium statement because the provider and billing unit are held as constant as the public offers allow. They still do not support a quality statement. The dataset contains no first-party test showing that a request through the more expensive row is more likely to succeed on a particular target.
The exact 50 GB residential panel on this site has nine non-conflicted rows and a median checkout of $122.50, produced by webshare-rotating-residential-monthly. The only non-conflicted datacenter row with an exact published 50 GB total is infatica-shared-datacenter-monthly at $29. That is evidence of two observed checkouts, not a market-wide residential-to-datacenter median, because one datacenter row is not a defensible comparison set. Flexibility has an observed price
One vendor isolates a product dimension unusually well. ProxyScrape sells the same residential traffic ladder with four expiry policies. At 100 GB, only the time available to use the traffic changes in the recorded product rows.

This is stronger evidence than a general claim about “premium networks.” It shows a vendor charging for a specific, buyer-visible property. A buyer who will consume the whole balance within 30 days does not receive economic value from the higher checkout. A buyer with irregular usage may.
A high advertised rate is not always a high checkout
The exact 50 GB residential rows range from GeoNode at $34.65 to Rayobyte at $250. The difference is 7.2150 times, even before comparing residential with another proxy type. That spread is not evidence that one plan is better. Several decision fields are not published on one or both rows. The data model therefore permits “lowest public checkout cost among plans that can be compared,” not “best proxy for your job.”
Minimum purchase also changes what “expensive” means. Bright Data’s residential PAYG row publishes $4 per GB, so a 50 GB requirement computes to $200. Its monthly residential row has a minimum checkout of $499 for a 141 GB starting tier. The subscription advertises a lower unit rate, but it requires more money at checkout for that volume. What competing explanations omit
Massive’s residential proxy pricing guide, retrieved 2026-07-26, says residential proxies typically cost $1.50 to $4 per GB. Our exact 50 GB panel includes geonode-residential-monthly at $0.693 per GB below that range and rayobyte-residential-monthly at $5 per GB above it. AIMultiple’s pricing page, retrieved 2026-07-26, attributes an average residential price of $8 per GB to high anonymity and complex sourcing. The price is a competitor claim, and the causal explanation is not reproducible from the plan rows it presents. Our dataset can confirm prices and plan properties. It cannot confirm a provider’s internal cost allocation.

The honest answer for a buyer
Residential traffic often costs more than datacenter traffic in matched public offers. The Bright Data and Evomi rows quantify that premium. The ProxyScrape rows show that expiry flexibility can add to the bill. The nine-plan 50 GB panel shows that residential pricing itself spans a wide checkout range.
The data cannot say that every residential plan is worth the premium, or that a specific network-cost story explains every vendor. Decide from the target you need to reach, the published checkout, the amount you will use before expiry and any constraint that can disqualify the cheap row. If target success matters, add a benchmark you measured for that target. Do not substitute a vendor’s network description for evidence of successful requests.
