Error 524 through a proxy: the site took too long to answer
A 524 means the site’s server accepted the work and did not finish it in time. Cloudflare’s documentation says it “indicates that Cloudflare successfully connected to the origin web server, but the origin did not provide an HTTP response before the default 125 seconds Proxy Read Timeout” (Cloudflare, Error 524). Cloudflare names the causes as the server having “too much work to do, for example, a large data query”, or struggling for resources.

Why it matters with a proxy
Unlike the other Cloudflare codes, a 524 can be caused by what you asked for. A search with no filters, an export of every row, or a page that builds a report on request can take the site’s server more than 125 seconds. The proxy is not the cause, and a faster proxy will not shorten the site’s work.
Check that it is Cloudflare’s code: a server: cloudflare header and a cf-ray header beside the 524 (curl -s -D - -o /dev/null -x "$PROXY" https://...).
What to do
- Ask for less per request. Request one page of results instead of all of them, a narrower date range, or a smaller export. The site’s own pagination exists for this.
- Look for the site’s data endpoint. Many pages that build slowly load their data from an API that answers faster in smaller pieces.
- Retry later, not at once. If the server is struggling, an immediate retry adds to the load.
- Keep your own timeout above 125 seconds only for requests that need it. For ordinary pages, a shorter timeout (30 seconds) frees the connection sooner, which matters on plans that cap connections at once (concurrency limits).
If the site is yours, Cloudflare suggests status polling for long processes, or moving requests that regularly take over 125 seconds to a hostname that is not proxied through Cloudflare.
What a slow page costs
On a plan billed by the GB, a 524 costs little traffic, since no page arrives. The cost is time and connections: a request held for two minutes is a connection your plan may count while it waits.
