Error 522 through a proxy: Cloudflare could not reach the site in time

A 522 is a timeout between Cloudflare and the site’s own server. Cloudflare’s documentation says it “occurs when Cloudflare times out contacting the origin web server”, and gives two limits: no reply to its connection attempt “within 19 seconds”, or, once connected, no acknowledgment of its request “within 90 seconds” (Cloudflare, Error 522). Your proxy delivered your request to Cloudflare; the wait that failed was after it.

Check where the timeout happened

curl -s -D - -o /dev/null -x "http://USERNAME:[email protected]:8000" https://the-site-you-need.com/page

A 522 with server: cloudflare and a cf-ray header is Cloudflare’s. If your tool instead reports its own timeout, or the proxy answers 504, the wait that failed was between you and the site: see 504 Gateway Timeout.

What causes it

Cloudflare’s list is all on the site’s side: Cloudflare’s addresses “rate limited or blocked” by the site’s firewall (“most common cause”), “An overloaded or offline origin web server”, keepalives disabled at the origin, DNS pointing at an old server address, and dropped packets.

What to do

  1. Load the page without the proxy. If it times out there too, the site is overloaded or down.
  2. Slow down if you were sending a lot. An overloaded server that drops requests drops yours too. If many 522s arrive while your job runs at full speed, fewer parallel requests may be both kinder to the site and cheaper for you.
  3. Retry with a wait of a minute or more. Overloads pass.
  4. Do not rotate IPs to fix it. The site’s server is not refusing your address; it is not answering Cloudflare.

If the site is yours, Cloudflare asks you to confirm with your host that all Cloudflare IP ranges are allowed and that the origin address in Cloudflare’s DNS is the current one.

524 is the other Cloudflare timeout: connected, but no answer in time. All the codes, by who sends them: proxy errors.
