How to set up a proxy on an iPhone

An iPhone takes a proxy per Wi-Fi network: Settings, Wi-Fi, the info button next to the network, then the HTTP Proxy setting. Apple’s guide puts it in one line: “Configure DNS, HTTP Proxy, and other network settings: Tap a setting, then enter the details” (Apple, Manage Wi-Fi settings on iPhone, checked Oct 19, 2026). It is an HTTP proxy with a server, a port and an optional username and password; it applies to that Wi-Fi network only, never to mobile data.

Set it up

  1. Go to the Settings app and tap Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap the info button next to the network you are on.
  3. Tap the HTTP proxy setting and choose Manual.
  4. Enter the server and port from your provider’s dashboard (for example proxy.example.com and 8000). Use the provider’s HTTP port: the setting is for an HTTP proxy, not SOCKS5.
  5. If the proxy takes a login, turn on authentication and enter the proxy username and password. Apple’s own description of a manual proxy lists the same fields: the hostname, “The port number of the proxy server”, and an optional “user name” and “password” for the manual proxy connection (Apple, Network Proxy Configuration settings).
  6. Tap Save.

Check that it works

Open https://api.ipify.org in Safari: it should show the proxy’s address. Turn Wi-Fi off and reload: on mobile data you see your carrier’s address, because the setting belongs to the Wi-Fi network. https://ipinfo.io/country shows the proxy’s country.

What to know before you rely on it

  • It is per network. Another Wi-Fi network, or mobile data, connects without the proxy. Set it on each network you use.
  • Apps choose whether to follow it. Safari does; an app that makes its own connections may not, and nothing on the phone tells you which.
  • A wrong login shows as pages that will not load or a repeated sign-in prompt: the proxy’s 407. Check the username and password in the provider’s dashboard.
  • A residential or mobile proxy plan billed by the GB counts everything the phone sends through it, including app updates and photo backups over that Wi-Fi. Turn the proxy off (choose Off in the same setting) when you are done. What a GB costs today: mobile proxy prices and residential.

How to test a proxy runs the same checks with curl on a computer. Android has the same setting under its Wi-Fi network: Android.
